Blue Raiders Fall to Western Carolina

By MTN Reporter: Ian Wolfe

The MTSU basketball team falls to Western Carolina in a close matchup, 66-64.

MTSU and Western Carolina traded blows to start the game with both teams making their first four shots. MTSU last lead the game seven minutes in with Western Carolina taking back the lead and keeping it for the remainder of the game.

Senior Guard for Western Carolina, Vonterious Woolbright, was the biggest difference in the game, scoring 21 points, going 7-19 from the field and 7-10 from the free throw line. On Woolbright trying to get to the free throw line and trying to contain it, MTSU Coach Nick McDevitt said, “That’s just kind of who he is, that’s his game. You’re going to end up having different guys on him.” Going on to say, “He’s really patient, he’s big, he’s strong, and he’s just a terrific player.”

A big difference in the game came from Western Carolina scoring 42 points in the paint. “Late in the second half is because we went zone, and I told our team I should’ve done a better and looked at that during the game.” Nick McDevitt said on adjusting defensively throughout the game in the paint. “Just thought we kept giving ground until they were at the rim, and you just got to bow up sometimes.”

MTSU will try to put this behind them and look forward to Milligan on Saturday. The game will be at 5 p.m. at the Murphy Center. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
