The Blue Raiders take down #19 Arizona
MURFREESBORO, Tenn.- In a match that took two days to complete due to rain, the #30 MTSU Blue Raiders dominate the #19 Arizona Wildcats by a score of 4-0 at the Blue Gray Tennis Classic. This is now the second top 25 win for the Blue Raiders in 8 days. Prior to the win at home versus Auburn, the last top 25 win from the Blue Raiders was on March 3, 2006.
The doubles point was played last night as MTSU won on courts 1 and 3 to gain the momentum. The number 23 doubles pairing in the nation of Francisco Rocha and Oskar Brostrom Poulsen moved to 9-1 after clinching a 6-4 win on court 1 which clinched the doubles point. Play was then suspended for being too dark to continue causing the singles play to be moved to this afternoon.
The Blue Raiders momentum carried over from last night as they won five of the six first sets. The first singles match to conclude was court 1 as #80 Stijn Slump defeated Arizona’s Jonas Eriksson Ziverts in straight sets by the score of 6-2, 6-2 to give MTSU a 2-0 advantage.
The big surprise came from Blue Raider Stepan Holis whose match ended a few minutes after Slump’s. Holis was facing off against # 71 Colton Smith and dominated the first set winning 6-0. Following the bagel, Holis carried the momentum that he gained into the second set to win 6-3. Holis’s upset put MTSU one win away from defeating the Wildcats.
Court 3 was the last to finish for the Blue Raiders as the steady Chris Edge won his match handily by a score of 6-2, 6-3. This was the clinching court for MTSU as they took down the Wildcats by a score of 4-0.
The win by MTSU advanced them to play in the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic Championship game to play against #29 Princeton Tigers at 5 PM CT tonight. This will be another chance resumé building win for a team that is in the midst of a historic season.
