UPDATED April 21, 2021

A shooting at Austin East Magnet High School in Knoxville on Monday. The shooting left one student dead and one officer injured. This comes after three students were killed last year from off-campus gun violence.

Police responded at around 3:15 P.M. to a report that a student had a gun. Police ordered the student to come out and after the student would not comply, the student began firing at police. Police fired back.

The student died at the school and the officer, a 20 year veteran school resource officer Adam Wilson, was transported to the hospital for surgery after being shot in the leg. The Officer was expected to recover. No one else was hurt.

The identity of the student has not been released. Police are still unsure what the student brought the gun to the school or why he fired at police.

Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon has requested the release of the redacted footage of the April 12 shooting at Austin East High School.

District attorney Charme Allen said that footage will not be released until “it has completed its function as criminal evidence”.

Mayor Kincannon said in a Twitter thread last week that policies involving the release of police footage and videos of minors in schools have complicated the situation.

This is an ongoing story and we will keep you updated as we get new information.
