Liberty Soccer Wins Conference-USA Tournament, Receives Bid to NCAA Tournament

By MTN Sports Reporter: Ian Wolfe

The Liberty Flames win the Conference-USA Soccer Championship against New Mexico State 2-1.

The first-year conference members finished the regular season 5-2-1 in conference and continued their winning form in the tournament with a 4-0 win against tournament hosts Louisiana Tech and a win in the Championship against New Mexico State 2-1.

Liberty took the lead first and New Mexico State evened the scoring 16 minutes later. More of the same continued throughout the match with possession going back and forth with both teams creating chances before Liberty scored the winning goal with six minutes to go in the game.

The game was very evenly matched with both teams trading blows and the winning goal coming six minutes before the final whistle. “I thought we did a better job just staying composed and connecting passes and that really opened the door for us.” Liberty Coach Lang Wedemeyer said. Continuing, “Our defense played well, we had a good game plan of how to stop their attack. We let one in but the way the girls fought back was fantastic.”

Liberty earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament in Cary, North Carolina. The women’s bracket release and selection show will be November 6th.
