MTSU Wins Overtime Thriller Against S.F. Austin

By MTN Sports Reporter: Ian Wolfe

MTSU Basketball won a close overtime game against Stephen F. Austin last night 67-62.

The game started fast with MTSU taking a convincing lead in the first 10 minutes of the game but finished the first half 6-20 from the field and trailing 31-22.

MTSU Coach Nick McDevitt knew Stephen F. Austin would give them a tough game. “We’ve played them three years in a row and this is their biggest, deepest, toughest, team.” Continuing, “They were big and physical and I thought we stepped up and met that challenge.”

Midway through the first half Stephen F. Austin took the lead and would keep it until a few minutes left in the game where MTSU would tie it and send the game to overtime. In overtime, MTSU would go 3-6 from the field and 7-8 from free throws, securing the win.

When asked about the team keeping mental toughness after being down most of the game, Nick McDevitt said, “I think it’s a testament to the players, just an over veteran group.” He continued, “If you would have heard some of the things being said in the huddle, you would have never thought we were out of it.”

MTSU has started the season 2-0 and will look to Western Carolina on Monday, November 13th. The game will be at 6:30 p.m. at the Murphy Center. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
