On Tuesday the Trump administration released more than 63,000 pages of records related to JFK’s assassination, making good on a promise he first made back in 2017.
At the time, some documents were withheld for national security reasons, but files have continually been released under the two previous administrations after the requirement that the collection be opened in 2017.
While it’s still unclear how many of these files were previously unreleased, it has been noted that many sections that had been redacted now appear completely uncensored.
It will take experts time to examine the documents and determine if there are any new and exciting revelations, and their workload will only increase as Trump has said he plans on releasing thousands more.
The majority of the more than 6 million pages of records, photographs, and other pieces of evidence had already been released, but according to experts this represents the most significant change in an administration’s attitude towards the JFK files since the 90s.
The JFK files became a popular topic due to several conspiracy theories, often fueled by redacted information and the withholding of documents from wider public consumption.
With this new release of information, historians and theorists alike are looking to gain a new understanding of what has become one the most infamous and discussed events in American history.
